Mr Malin Wijeratna was appointed as an Orthopaedic Consultant in 2014 and specialises in shoulder and elbow surgery in the NHS at Northampton General Hospital and private sectors in Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire. He is available to see patients with a GP referral through the NHS, or by self-referral through the private sector.

Mr Wijeratna is a highly experienced and skilled surgeon having undergone extensive specialist training and having treated thousands of patients.

He completed his medical training in 2002 at Guys, Kings and St Thomas’ Medical School, London. His postgraduate orthopaedic training included working at specialist centres in London, Cambridge, Southampton and Melbourne, Australia.

He worked as an Orthopaedic Consultant at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust for 7 years before taking his expertise to Northampton General Hospital in 2022. He is able to see patients from all over the East Midlands in the private sector with clinics in Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire.

Mr Wijeratna prides himself on excellent clinical outcomes. He carefully selects the right treatment options for each individual to ensure they get the best outcome. He has a special interest in shoulder replacements, and has pioneered the use of computer-navigated shoulder replacement surgery in the Midlands.

Mr Wijeratna is a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society and has built worldwide connections in orthopaedics. He works closely with medical device companies and researches the future of orthopaedics.

Mr Wijeratna has built a strong reputation and has a passion for sharing his knowledge with others. He teaches other shoulder surgeons on advanced techniques in the UK and abroad including arthroscopic techniques and computer-navigated shoulder replacements. He regularly teaches Junior Doctors, General Practitioners, Physiotherapists and Advanced Nurse Practitioners in different settings.

As well as actively publishing many research papers in peer reviewed journals articles on rotator cuff repair, elbow arthroscopy and sternoclavicular joint anatomy, amongst other conditions, Mr Wijeratna has contributed to textbooks of orthopaedic surgery and has reviewed scientific articles for international medical journals. He has won prizes for his publications at the British Shoulder and Elbow Society and presented at annual conferences. He has gained research grants to further his studies.
